Transformation Tuesday: Joan

Welcome to back for another Transformation Tuesday series! Today we’re hearing from Joan!

Q: When did you realize that you had a weight problem?
A: I’ve had a weight problem all my life. I had to shop in the husky department when I was younger. I tried Weight Watchers and other programs throughout my life. My mother and I went together when I was a teenager and that made it easier as she did all the cooking!

Q: What made you decide to do something about it?
A: The main reason I finally decided to re-join Weight Watchers and stick to it this time was because I run a weight loss support club with a friend in our development. It’s called “The Weight is Over”. Every week I would give advice on how to handle situations but realized I had to “practice what I preach”. I no longer felt right leading the group when I wasn’t doing anything to lose the weight myself.

Q: When did you start?
A: I’ve been doing it 31 weeks as of this writing.

Q: How much weight have you lost?
A: I have lost 28 lbs. which is 4 lbs. below my goal!

Q: What is/was your goal?
A: My goal was to look and feel better and I do!

Q: What weight loss program or eating modifications do you follow?
A: I follow Weight Watchers

Q: Can you explain your basic program?
A: You count the points values for all the foods you eat. By now I know what the points are for most of my favorite foods. I love this plan because it allows me to eat anything at all as long as I have the points left for the day. I never liked other plans that restrict certain food groups.

Q: Do you exercise?
A: I was exercising but almost a year ago I fractured my ankle and had to stop. I have had trouble getting back into it. I now do exercise challenges on Facebook. One month was planks, then crunches and now we’re doing wall sits! One of my neighbors has also encouraged me to walk more with her.

Q: How often and how much?
A: I do whatever challenge we’re doing every day and try to walk a couple of nights a week. My husband and I do a lot of walking on the week-end.

Q: Where and when do you exercise?
A: I do the challenges in my house and we walk around our beautiful neighborhood. We are also going to push ourselves to use the gym more. My friend and I went one day last week when we didn’t have enough people to play Maj Jongg!

Q: What exercises work for you?
A: Anything works if you keep at it. The challenges definitely helped me get to my weight goal. I like some of the classes they have at the gym – Water Aerobics and Exercise Lite are the ones I was doing prior to hurting my ankle.

Q: What are your trigger foods?
A: I love food rather than desserts so if I’m given a large portion I tend to eat the whole thing. My favorite food of all is steak and, again, I finish whatever is on my plate. The only problem now is that certain foods no longer agree with me!

Q. How do you cope with temptation?
A: I get weighed on Saturday mornings so I usually try to go out to eat Saturday night or Sunday to give myself a week to get any indulgence off before the next weigh in. Since I’ve been so motivated I don’t give in to the temptations during the week.

Q: Have you ever gotten discouraged? What do you do about it?
A: This time around I never got discouraged. I post my weight loss or gain each week on Facebook which gives me the accountability and extra support I need. The complements I get keep me going as well. I also don’t give in to emotional eating anymore either.

Q: How did you feel about looking at photos of yourself? Has that changed?
A: I definitely like looking at pictures of myself more now. I never minded having my picture taken but like the way I look in them now much better!!

Q: What is the best benefit of losing weight for you?
A: I feel better. I don’t get as out of breath doing things. I also like buying smaller sizes of clothes! I can shop in stores that I couldn’t before!

Q: Do people ask you for advice? What do you tell them?
A: People do ask me for advice and tell me I motivate them which is a shock to me! I tell them to find a program that works for them and stick with it. I had posted on Facebook that I would only post once a month now since I’m at goal and several “friends” asked me to keep reporting every week – that it keeps them motivated!

Q: What have you been able to do that you couldn’t have done before?
A: I make better choices in restaurants and cook more healthy foods for myself at home. I feel more comfortable leading the group every Wednesday morning!
